Second Language Methodology

Growing up I was an English Language Learner. I felt like I understood how I learned a second language and what goes into learning a second language. So, I felt that I understood how it was done and it seemed pretty simple. Through this online course, I soon realized that it was not actually so simple as it looked. As I knew already, each child is different. Each child learns differently. Each child comes to you at a different level. The same goes for English Language Learners. They are all different but other things must be taken into account such as how their home language can impact how they learn and acquire English. Through my own experience, I, of course, did not know this. I did not know these little aspects were taken into account. There is so much that goes into teaching English Language Learners. For this entry, I interviewed a teacher that works on the first grade team with my cooperating teacher and I. This is the interview . Reflection After interviewing Mrs. Aitken, I learned some more about the field of English Language Acquisition and its many nuances. In Mrs. Aitken’s case because she was primarily a kindergarten teacher in the past and is a first-grade teacher currently, she could naturally teach a child English because it’s naturally how you would teach these grade levels. At the grade levels she had taught it’s natural to teach using many visuals, modeling, and having them work with their peers. I also really like the point she brought up about the immersion and pull-out method. I am in favor of students being fully immersed, but I do agree with what she said about being pull-out only for a short amount of time. As each day pass, things are discovered and things are refined. The past affects our present and future and things that are learned by our ancestors or by our predecessors is passed along generations. Throughout our history this has happened. So, regarding how language research has impacted language teaching practices today, I feel like it has had a great impact in how we learn a language.         In our textbook, Teaching by Principles: An Interactive Approach to Language Pedagogy by H. Douglas Brown and Heekyeong Lee, there is a whole chapter dedicated to the evolving teaching practice regarding language acquisition titled “A Century of Language Teaching”. As you flip through the chapter you see the series of methods in ways that language acquisition has been taught.
